This is easy for me to say now that I have gone through a bunch of problems of my own making. Spend your money when you have it. If you can't afford a new bike, look for a good reliable used bike for the time being. I'm not saying to not shop around and have fun dealing with the dealers but don't make the mistake of putting yourself in a situation that you can not afford. The odd are that your friend was being a good friend by not putting you in a situation that you may not be able to handle.
In general I don't regret much any of what I have done, but I sure have pissed away a fair amount of money (excuse the expression).
